When your income comes from commissions, health insurance needs to fit both your care needs and your cash flow. Arizona real estate professionals buying their own coverage should compare the full policy, including the months when closings are slower.

Your real estate license does not determine your health plan

If your brokerage does not provide employer coverage, you can shop for individual or family insurance. Becoming a realtor does not automatically create a special enrollment opportunity. Losing qualifying employer coverage may, so check the date your existing insurance ends.

Compare the available routes

Marketplace coverage

An ACA Marketplace plan provides pre-existing-condition protections and may offer premium assistance if your household qualifies. Check doctors and prescriptions against the specific plan. Read Marketplace coverage protections.

Plans outside the Marketplace

These can include ACA-compliant coverage without Marketplace tax credits and non-ACA products with different eligibility and benefits. A private alternative may have a useful network or a competitive price, but those features are policy-specific. Understand Marketplace and private coverage.

Limited or supplemental coverage

Short-term and fixed-benefit products are not interchangeable with comprehensive major medical insurance. Review excluded services, payment limits, and renewal terms. A lower premium does not establish that a product protects you against the bills you are concerned about.

Plan for commission income

Marketplace applications use estimated net self-employment income for the coverage year. Gross commissions are not the same as net profit. Update the application when your income outlook changes; the amount of assistance you ultimately qualify for may change too. HealthCare.gov explains self-employment income.

Build a premium budget you can sustain during slower months, then consider how much you could afford if you needed unexpected care. Avoid choosing a plan that fits only your best sales month.

Check the network around your actual life

  • Your primary care doctor and important specialists.
  • The hospitals and urgent-care locations you would use.
  • Prescription coverage and pharmacy arrangements.
  • Routine care outside Arizona if you travel.
  • Referral requirements and out-of-network costs.

A PPO label alone does not establish a larger network or coverage everywhere. An HMO or EPO may fit well if it includes the care you need. Compare the specific providers and benefits.

What to review before you enroll

  • Monthly premium after any eligible assistance.
  • Deductible, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket limits.
  • Exclusions, waiting periods, and caps on benefits.
  • Effective date and any underwriting conditions.
  • Renewal terms and how to get help using the policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can a part-time realtor buy individual coverage?

Yes. Your options depend on your eligibility and enrollment timing, not whether real estate is your full-time occupation. Also compare any coverage available through another job or a spouse.

Can I deduct my premiums?

Some self-employed people qualify for a health insurance deduction. Eligibility depends on tax rules and your circumstances. Ask your tax professional before building a deduction into your budget.

Can I replace my current plan immediately?

Do not assume so. Confirm enrollment eligibility, any underwriting decision, the new effective date, and payment requirements before ending current coverage.
